Huawei wins STC network upgrade contract

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators, has been awarded a contract by Saudi Telecom Company (STC) to upgrade its existing network to HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Evolution).

This HSPA+ network will provide higher downlink data rate of up to 21.6Mb/s to STC’s subscribers. It is believed that this network which covers all Saudi Arabia’s harbours in Gulf area will greatly improve the efficiency of information flow and promote the sustainable development of local community, the statement said.

As of the first half of 2009, Huawei has been awarded more than 150 UMTS/HSPA commercial contracts in over 100 countries, with a total shipment of more than 1.1million TRXs. Chinese equipment vendor Huawei Technologies has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Saudi Telecom Company (STC) to upgrade parts of its 3G/3.5G networks with HSPA+ technology, Trade Arabia reports. Huawei will initially deploy the upgrade in Damman, Khobar and the country’s Northern region, eventually covering all Saudi harbour towns along the Persian Gulf. The HSPA+ network will boost download speeds to a peak of 21.6Mbps. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, STC’s relationship with Huawei extends back to 2006 when the firm deployed the operator’s first W-CDMA network, which has since been upgraded with HSDPA and HSUPA evolutions.
