Huawei opens research center in France

PARIS — Seeking to strengthen its presence on the French soil, Chinese communications equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. announced it has created a basic research center in Cergy-Pontoise, near Paris, France.

This center, noted Huawei (Shenzhen, China), will focus on mobile phones. It will employ 20 people at the time of its opening, at the end of September, with a plan to reach 50 employees by the end of the year.

In 2007, Huawei opened a center in Lannion, in the French region of Brittany, to focus on fixed broadband system enhancements. This was shortly after its competitor Alcatel-Lucent announced plans to cut 217 jobs in the city of Lannion.

Huawei set up its first site in France in 2003 and has been providing telecom equipment to France Telecom, Free, Neuf Cegetel, SFR and Completel.
