A Chinese man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a plot to harm a pro-democracy politician and a newspaper publisher. The man, Huang Nanhua, 50, was accused of planning to assassinate the politician, Martin Lee, in August. At a routine police roadblock, the authorities have said, Mr. Huang was found to be carrying a homemade gun, bullets and the contact details for Mr. Lee and for the publisher, Jimmy Lai. Mr. Lai’s tabloid, Apple Daily, is known for its pro-democracy leanings and critical stance toward China.
