Guangzhou Asiad on Target for Record Sponsorship Haul
|
Next year’s Asian Games in Guangzhou is on track to attract a record amount of sponsorship despite the global economic downturn, organisers said on Friday.
The total amount of corporate sponsorships was already more than four times the amount generated by the last Games in Doha, Qatar in 2006, a news release said.
Organisers said in March they had already secured two thirds of their target with some 20 billion yuan ($292.4 million) pledged but were concerned that some of the companies on board might be hit by the financial crisis.
“We have tried to avoid the impacts of the global financial meltdown since last year,” marketing chief Fang Da’er said in the release.
“Our hard work has paid off because the initial goal of finding adequate sponsorship was realised one and a half years ahead of the Games’ opening.”
Twenty eight companies had signed deals, including the Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group for more than 600 million yuan, with five to eight more expected before June, the release added.
The highly successful marketing programme for last August’s Beijing Olympics raised enough to cover the organising committee’s half of the $2.1 billion operating costs of running the Games and helped contribute to a $16 million profit.
The 16th Asian Games are expected to attract 12,000 participants from 45 countries to southern China from Nov. 12 to 27 next year.
