Q:
Why do foreigners need to get Tibet Travel Permit(TTP)?
A:
In the light of Tibet’s unique national traditions, cultural heritage and the requirement for ecological environment protection, and the traffic situation in Tibet and its tourism service facilities and reception capacity, the Chinese Government requires that the non-Chinese citizenship holders, namely foreign tourists, Taiwan and overseas Chinese tourists (except Hong Kong and Macao residents with Chinese SAR passports or Home Visit Permit), must get TTP issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) before entering into Tibet, and it is stipulated that the foreign journalists and diplomats can not enter into Tibet as tourists. The time for geting the TTP is usually three working days. According to the provisions of authorities, foreigners and Chinese Taiwan compatriots are not allowed to take Do-it-yourself tour, they must take the group tour orgnized by travel agency in a planned way.

Hi
We are Polish and in the group of 4 persons we’d like to visit a salt village Yanjing, near the border of Yunnan and Sichuan. We are going to stay there for two days, just on the way from Yunnan to Sichuan. Do we need a Tibet permit and how can we get it?
Since Salt village is located in Markam County, Qamdo Prefecture of Tibet, you have to get Tibet Travel Permit to get there, and you should join a tour goup of at least five people. You can consult a travel agency with the qualification to apply for Tibet permit for more information.
