The organizing committee of the Guangzhou 5th Friendship Games To Open November 1st

The organizing committee of the Guangzhou 5th Friendship Games held a press conference at the Guangzhou Administration of Sports on October 22nd. They announced that the 5th Friendship Games would be held on November 1st and 2nd at the Tianhe Sports Center. According to statistics, more than 700 athletes from home and abroad will battle it out during the Games.

Mr. Li Ming, Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou, and Vice President of the Friendship Association said that, as of October 20th, 76 institutions had registered for the game, among whom 37 were Chinese and 39 were foreign. The foreign participants are from 38 countries and regions, including consular working staff, foreign experts and international students. The number of foreign participants has reached 660.

The Chinese participants mainly include officials from enterprises, public organizations and members of the Friendship Association. The number now totals around 100. The two Vice Mayors, Xu Ruisheng and Xu Zhibiao are both also registered for the games. In the Games participants will battle it out in 6 events, such as basketball, tennis, ping pong and badminton.

Li Ming also said that this session of the games has initiated use of the mechanisms of marketing, which is to invite tenders and cooperate with design companies. In the past the game were solely sponsored by the government. He said that everybody would be welcome to cheer the athletes during the games at the Tianhe Sports Center.

The Friendship Games have been held 4 times previously, namely in 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2007. The number of participating countries and athletes and the scale this year have set an historical record.
