Over 100 Polluting Enterprises in Guangzhou Closed in Past 5 Months

On October 6th, it is learned from the Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau that 80 percent of the 146 polluting enterprises, which have previously been ordered to take corrective actions under the supervision of the government, have made rectifications. Still, in the past five months, Guangzhou has closed over 100 polluting enterprises and thoroughly removed the sources of pollution previously identified. The leader of the Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau commented that all the enterprises should complete the rectification orders as given or they may be given regional restrictions.

In May of this year, over 146 polluting enterprises in Baiyun, Panyu, Huadu, Huangpu, Haizhu, Conghua and Zengcheng Districts were required to take corrective actions under the supervision of the government. Zheng Zewen, Director of the Law and Regulation Department of the Bureau said the 4 enterprises in the Liuxihe River Basin have completed basic steps in the rectification order. The Yijing Glass Craft Factory has been ordered to halt production and to pay a fine of 100,000 Yuan by the Baiyun Environmental Protection Bureau and the factory has been moved. The Guangzhou Donghai Glass Co., Ltd. has proven slow in the process of rectification and had continued to operate with backward water pollution facilities and excessive waste water discharge, and so has been closed down by the Baiyun Government on 24th September.

Accepting neighborhood complaints related to the presence of odorous pollutants, the Guangzhou Wanbao Refrigerator Factory was also included on the list of polluting enterprises by the environmental department. It was recently reported that the Wanbao Factory has invested over 2 million Yuan in its effort for environmental transformation. Now, the factory has achieved acceptable standards in the waste and odorous gases as well as noise levels and, at the supervision meeting of 28th September, it was removed from the list of polluting enterprises.
