7 injured in buffalo rampage in shenzhen

TWO buffalos went on a four-hour rampage injuring seven people after escaping from a meat processing plant in Longhua, Bao’an District, on Sunday.

The buffalos were later tracked down in two different places and put down.

The buffalos were shipped in from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. “Similar incidents have happened before,” said an employee of the meat processing plant surnamed Li. “These buffalos all lived in the mountains and were quite wild. It is hard to control them once they go mad.”

The animals went on rampage at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when they were being unloaded from a truck at the meat processing plant. More than 10 workers at the plant immediately mounted motorcycles and chased the animals.

Frightened by people and vehicles on the road, the buffalos “charged anyone and any car they encountered just like they had gone mad,” said a female witness surnamed Li, adding that she had seen four people knocked down by the buffalos.

A man on a motorcycle was thrown more than a meter into the air and, after hitting the ground, he was again knocked more than five meters by one of the animals. The unnamed man suffered a number of fractures.

One of the buffalos later charged the northern gate of a housing estate and hit a cleaner surnamed Chen. It also crushed the front of a car before stopping at a nearby construction site to drink water.

“I wanted to avoid the wild animal,” Chen said. “But seeing it rush toward children playing on the estate, I ran forward and swatted its head with a broom.” The buffalo turned on Chen and knocked him down. Chen was taken to hospital where he had 26 stitches to his left armpit which had been gored. His right leg was also broken.

The meat processing plant has paid the medical fees for those injured in the incident. They were treated at either Longhua Hospital or Jian’an Hospital. Officials at the plant said they would also compensate the person whose car was damaged.
